Two tiny bones that could be ruining your life…
Before I share with you my insight into the two really important bones that could hold the key to your health, I’d like to tell you a story.
I have a patient (she has allowed me to share her story with you) who is in her late 40s. She was formerly a member of the Australian Defence Force, and this brave soldier is parachute qualified and carried a backpack around for many years. Naturally, she had back and neck pain… But…She had a host of other symptoms – she was struggling with some hormonal imbalance, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, foggy thinking, and digestive problems. She would wake up in the early hours of the morning with a headache – and it would last all day. She had seen countless physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, and various massage therapists for her back and neck pain. She never once talked to these practitioners about her other
symptoms because she didn’t think that they could possibly be related. How could her indigestion have anything to do with her back? How could her foggy thinking be related to her neck? The idea was foreign to her – and to many of us.
And then she came to see me…
I brought her in and we talked about her symptoms – and I developed a treatment strategy to deal with them. And she followed that treatment plan. She ate what I told her to eat, she took the supplements I told her to take, and she did the other actions I prescribed for her.
But, she just wasn’t getting better…
You see, I was treating her illness symptoms without thinking about her back or neck – and the chiropractor was treating her back and neck symptoms without taking into account her other illnesses.
That was a real mistake…
And then I learned all about the Atlas Vertebra and Sphenoid Bone Complex – and something fascinating changed.
You see, a month or so ago, I was in the USA undertaking advanced nutritional and energetic healing training under a world leader in this area when I met another practitioner with whom I chatted and discussed clinical problems. We spoke about patients for whom healing has been a challenge – and he asked me a simple, but profound question, ‘Have you checked their spinal alignment?’
He then went on further to explain that spinal alignment is not so much about ‘cracking’ your back or ‘twisting’ your spine to get it back into place. Rather, true and effective spinal alignment comes from two very small, but absolutely critical bones – the Atlas Vertebra and the Sphenoid Bone Complex.
This practitioner told me that once he realigned these two crucial bones, like a row of dominoes, the rest of the spine fell into place. Then, for the first time in their lives for many people, the body was truly balanced. This proper skeletal alignment enabled blood flow and nerve conductivity to move freely to nourish and heal organs and body systems. Over time, his patients started to feel measurably better, and many of the various issues they were suffering from started to reduce and then leave them.
It really got me thinking – could these two, small bones really make such a powerful difference to health? Could they be a missing factor in the health of many of my challenging patients?
I was intrigued, but I was sceptical. So, I sought out an international leader in Atlas Vertebra realignment. And from him, I learnt the following about the Atlas (and the Sphenoid):
The Atlas Vertebra: What it is and What it Does
Your Atlas plays an incredibly important role in maintaining spinal alignment. And when the Atlas gets shifted out of place, it affects the entire spine. Much like a row of dominoes – when you push the first one it knocks down all the others – well – the Atlas is like the first ‘vertebra domino’; if it gets ‘out of whack’ then all the other vertebrae are ‘knocked over’ too. This can lead to a host of physical conditions and pain – as well as mental and emotional symptoms. This is because when the Atlas is misaligned, it causes all parts of the spine to be affected, and important nerves and blood vessels are impacted which create problems in organs and body systems. This can cause people to feel sick, in pain and with low energy. When this situation continues, it can create a constellation of symptoms commonly referred to as Atlas Misalignment Syndrome (AMS).
Atlas Misalignment Syndrome
The development of Atlas Misalignment Syndrome (AMS) isn’t sudden – it happens over months and years of the Atlas sitting in an incorrect position. And in response, all the muscles and bones adjust to keep the body in some form of balance. This causes muscle tension, skeletal stress and reduction in blood flow and nerve conductivity. When this situation remains over a long time, organs and body systems don’t get the nourishment, blood flow, oxygen and nerve support that they need in order to remain well. This leads to degeneration and illness.
How Your Atlas Gets Misaligned
Misalignment of your Atlas often starts at birth, but it can develop as a result of trauma (physical or emotional) during your life. Some of the questions that practitioners ask to determine if someone is likely to suffer from Atlas Misalignment Syndrome (AMS) are:
- Did you have a forceps delivery or a difficult birth?
- Have you had any accidents that hurt your spine?
- Have you played individual or team sports?
- Do you get neck or back pain?
- Do you get headaches, migraines or dizziness?
- Have you got symptoms that you have had treated but you’re still suffering?
Symptoms of Atlas Misalignment
Common symptoms include neck and back pain, particularly issues that don’t clear up with repeated treatment by a chiropractor or osteopath. Additional symptoms can range from blurred vision, headaches and dizziness through to skeletal problems, nerve pain and digestive disturbances. Because misalignment of the Atlas affects your whole spine – it affects your whole body – and many health issues not directly related to your spine can occur.
Getting Your Neck and Spine Balanced is Only Half the Cure
I think that you can understand now that the correct positioning of your Atlas is essential to your ongoing health.
But, I learnt that realigning the Atlas was only half the story…
If you think about it for a moment – if your neck and spine are all nicely aligned and in their correct places – what about your head?
Does the skull itself need to be properly balanced? The answer is – Yes.
This is because if the important bones of your skull are also misaligned, then you can experience headaches, nausea, dizziness – and this can impact on the alignment of your Atlas. By addressing both of these essential, key elements of your body structure, you set yourself up for increased health and overall wellness. And of all the bones of the skull – the Sphenoid plays the most important part.
The Sphenoid (known as the ‘central bone’) is the most complex bone of the whole human body. It is shaped like a butterfly and forms part of your skull. If you took your head off your neck and turned it upside down, you’d see your Sphenoid sitting in the centre – looking a lot like a butterfly – with a large and a small set of ‘wings’.
What the Sphenoid Does
The Sphenoid is so important because it is responsible for balancing the entire skull (which weighs about the same as a large bowling ball!). It is related in some way to all 14 bones of the skull. In addition, it is directly involved in protecting important organs such as the pituitary gland, and essential nerves and arteries that feed the brain and the eyes. It is also important to the sinuses and nasal cavity. Because of its location, the Sphenoid can affect the pituitary gland, the hypothalamus, the nervous system, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood flow to and from the brain. The sphenoid cradles your brain and helps the whole spinal cord and brain to be bathed in new spinal fluid. So, your Sphenoid is very, very important.
Sphenoid Misalignment – Causes
Birth issues are a common cause of Sphenoidal Misalignment. You see, when you’re born, the bones of your skull are soft and not yet fused (glued) together properly. This allows your head to pass through your mother’s birth canal when you’re born. But, during this traumatic process, these soft but important bones of the skull (like your Sphenoid) don’t always relocate themselves back into the best position. This is a primary cause of Sphenoidal Misalignment. Other causes include contact sports, accidents, head injuries and – believe it or not – stress…
How Do You Know If Your Atlas or Sphenoid Are Misaligned?
That’s a great question. The easiest and best way is to get tested by someone who is trained in Atlas and Sphenoidal Misalignment. And in Australia, very few practitioners specialise in this issue.
How Do You Fix Atlas and Sphenoid Misalignment?
To fix an Atlas and Sphenoid Misalignment, you really need to see someone specialised in this sort of treatment. Because of the location of your Atlas and Sphenoid, ‘cracking’ and ‘twisting’ of the neck and spine really don’t do the trick. You need specialised training and equipment.
But What About My Patient?
So, now you know about the importance of both the Atlas and Sphenoid. I understood the role and function of these bone structures through my anatomy and physiology studies at university. But, until I underwent the specialised training to treat Atlas-Sphenoid Misalignment, I didn’t really appreciate the importance of them to overall health.
So, once I was trained up, I was excited to head back to Australia to try this technique out on my patients – particularly the one I mentioned earlier.
When I saw her, I enthusiastically told her about my new-found skill in Atlas-Sphenoid Realignment. I went through the possible symptoms, the importance of these bones – and how I proposed to treat her. She was very interested. I tested her Atlas to determine if it was out of alignment – and it was – slightly twisted and leaning forward to the right. I used my realignment tool, along with the specialised technique I was taught. I also realigned her Sphenoid so that her skull was balanced.
After the treatment, she stood and walked around. ‘My feet feel flatter on the floor – and I feel more stable and balanced’, she said. The next day, I received an email from her, ‘The muscles in my back were sore all night – I could literally feel them adjusting to their proper positions!’ A few weeks later, we met again for a review. ‘I’m sleeping better, and my sinuses seem to be clearer’, she commented. She continues to improve – little by little. One thing she said to me stuck with me: ‘I’ve spent thousands of dollars getting my back and neck treated – only to have them go out of place again. Little did I know that I first needed to get my skull and then my Atlas balanced – I could have saved myself a lot of money if I had done that first!’
“One small set of bones, one single treatment, Amazing results!”
That sums up Atlas-Sphenoid Realignment for me…

- Your Atlas is the small bone located directly under your skull.
- It balances your head and directs the positioning of all bones in the spine.
- Your Atlas can get misaligned through birth, accident, sports or trauma.
- When this happens, all the bones in your spine are affected and so are the nerves that run from your brain through your spinal column.
- This can lead to neck and back pain, as well as problems with your organs and general health.
- If this happens, you can develop Atlas Misalignment Syndrome (AMS), which is correlated with many health conditions.
- By getting your Atlas realigned, your whole spine, your nerves, and your whole body are helped.
- When you also correct any misalignment of your Sphenoid Bone, your skull becomes balanced.
- This can help many health conditions improve.
- Atlas-Sphenoid realignment usually only requires ONE TREATMENT.
- It is non-invasive, simple, relaxing and requires NO cracking or twisting of your back or neck.
